WinDriver’s Cross-Platform Compatibility

A Toolkit Designed for Modern Driver Development

In today’s fragmented computing landscape, device driver developers are often forced to grapple with a daunting challenge: building and maintaining drivers that function reliably across different operating systems, kernel versions, and processor architectures. Jungo’s WinDriver offers a comprehensive and modern solution to this problem by enabling seamless cross-platform compatibility. This capability comes in three powerful "faces": compatibility across operating systems, across kernel versions, and across architectures (32-bit on 64-bit).

One Driver, All Major Operating Systems

Driver development is notoriously platform-specific. What runs smoothly on Windows may require significant rewriting for Linux, and even more for macOS, due to differences in APIs, memory management, security models, and toolchains.

For developers aiming to distribute drivers across Windows, Linux, and macOS, this means managing three different codebases, each with its own compilation flags, dependencies, and runtime quirks.

  • Unified Development: Generate and modify your driver once – WinDriver takes care of the rest.
  • Smart Build System: Our included CMake file handles all platform-specific flags and definitions, including ARM support.
  • Truly Cross-Platform: WinDriver-generated drivers don’t just build across platforms – they run across them.

Whether your users are on Windows, Linux, or macOS, your driver is ready to go.

Cross Compatibility Overview

Built to Handle OS & Kernel Updates

Operating system kernels evolve constantly. Whether it’s Windows introducing stricter signing policies, Linux changing its internal APIs, or macOS restructuring its kernel extensions, these updates can easily “break” existing drivers. Developers must often rewrite or patch drivers to keep pace, leading to development overhead and system instability for end-users.

WinDriver actively mitigates this issue by tracking changes in kernel versions and maintaining compatibility with the latest system updates. The toolkit is routinely updated to work with newer kernel releases across Windows, Linux, and macOS, so driver developers don’t have to dive into the details of each system’s internal evolution.

WinDriver is designed to stay ahead of these changes, so you don’t have to.

  • Automatic Compatibility: We continuously update WinDriver to support new OS builds and kernel versions.
  • Easy Upgrades: Just update your WinDriver version to stay compliant – no need to manually rebuild or rewrite your driver.
  • Proven Reliability: From Windows kernel hardening to Linux API changes and macOS driver shifts, WinDriver absorbs the complexity so your driver keeps working.

Keep your drivers running smoothly across updates – without the maintenance headaches.

32-on-64 Bit Build, Made Simple

With the world steadily moving toward 64-bit architectures, support for legacy 32-bit drivers remains a critical concern – especially for industrial and embedded systems that have a long lifecycle. Developers often need to support older software while preparing for future hardware transitions, and running 32-bit drivers on 64-bit systems (commonly known as 32on64) presents its own set of compatibility and tooling issues.

WinDriver rises to this challenge by offering dedicated support and build tools for 32on64 development. The toolkit provides makefiles, project files, and clear documentation for compiling and running 32-bit drivers on 64-bit operating systems, across all supported platforms.

Still supporting 32-bit applications on modern 64-bit systems? WinDriver makes it easy.

  • Full 32on64 Support: Build and run 32-bit drivers on 64-bit operating systems – Windows, Linux, and macOS.
  • Ready-to-Use Build Files: We provide the tools, documentation, and guidance to make the transition seamless.

The modern device driver developer needs more than just code – they need a toolkit that adapts to operating systems, evolves with kernel versions, and bridges architectural gaps. WinDriver’s cross-platform compatibility delivers exactly that. With support for Windows, Linux, and macOS; built-in kernel version resilience; and 32on64 driver support, WinDriver removes the friction from building portable, future-proof drivers. Whether you’re building new hardware, maintaining legacy systems, or distributing across global markets, WinDriver ensures your drivers stay reliable and ready – wherever they run.

Benefits

Faster Time-to-Market Across Platforms

Developers can write and test the driver logic once and deploy it across all three major operating systems — greatly reducing platform-specific development time and accelerating release cycles.

Seamless Porting Between OSes

Existing driver projects can be ported between Windows, Linux, and macOS without rewriting core logic, enabling expansion into new markets or product ecosystems with minimal engineering effort.

Unified QA and Validation Workflow

Cross-platform consistency means QA teams can use the same test plans, scripts, and validation tools across OSes reducing duplication and improving test coverage across environments.

Simplified Support and Troubleshooting

Because behavior and code structure remain consistent across all platforms, technical support teams need to understand only one driver framework, streamlining diagnosis and resolution across customer environments.

Testimonials

Inomed- Jörg Wipfler (Head of R&D)
“Usually, if a problem occurs during the development process, you don’t know whether it’s in the firmware – or even in the hardware – or in the software on the PC, WinDriver helped enormously to avoid such problems.”
GE Healthcare - Yann Casteignau (Principal Engineer Digital Hardware Design)
“We were looking for a driver to allow access to the board’s resources for a Windows 2000-based software. Having no intention to develop the driver in-house, we then searched the web and found Jungo’s solution.”
Brookhaven National Laboratory - John Haggerty (Data Acquisition Coordinator)
“I have been impressed with the relative ease with which one can develop a high performance driver for a PCI card without much detailed knowledge of the computer’s hardware or even the system software."
BittWare - Dave Hedstrom (Senior Software Engineer)
“When we tried Jungo’s WinDriver, we were immediately pleased with what they had to offer, using only the evaluation version, we found that none of the limitations of the competing tool that we were faced with, applied to Jungo’s WinDriver. After only three days of development, we had a working driver and a kernel plug in for interrupts”
