Custom Driver Development

In today’s technology-driven world, the demand for high-performance, specialized hardware continues to grow.

Alongside this growth, there is an increasing need for custom driver development, which allows operating systems to communicate effectively with unique hardware. Whether the device uses PCI, PCI Express (PCIe), or USB interfaces, custom drivers are essential for achieving optimal performance, stability, and access to special hardware features.

Why Custom Driver Development Matters

Most operating systems include many general-purpose drivers. However, custom hardware, especially in industries like industrial automation, medical devices, automotive, and defense often needs custom drivers. These drivers:

  • Enable special features not supported by standard drivers.
  • Ensure maximum performance by managing resources well.
  • Work closely with unique software systems or APIs.

Interface Overview

PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect)

PCI is an older type of bus used to connect devices to a computer’s motherboard. While PCI is mostly replaced by PCIe today, many legacy systems still use PCI hardware, which means driver support is still needed.

PCI Express (PCIe)

PCIe is the modern version of PCI. It offers faster speedsdirect connections, and scalability. It is commonly used in graphics cardsnetwork cardsstorage controllers, and FPGA boards. Custom drivers for PCIe devices usually handle memory-mapped I/O (MMIO)interrupts, and Direct Memory Access (DMA).

USB (Universal Serial Bus)

USB is the standard for connecting external devices. Custom USB drivers are common for proprietary devicesdata collection units, and embedded systems. These drivers must manage endpoint communicationcontrol transfers, and sometimes real-time transfers like isochronous or interrupt transfers.

Key Phases in Custom Driver Development

Define Hardware and Requirements

Understand the hardware design, communication methods, and expected data flow. Collaborate with hardware engineers to align the driver’s functions with system needs.

Set Up the Development Environment

Select the operating system and install necessary tools, SDKs, and compilers. Establish a testing setup using either real hardware or simulators.

Design Driver Architecture

Decide on user-mode or kernel-mode design and outline features like interrupt handling and DMA. Include security measures such as signing and access control.

Develop and Implement the Driver

Write the driver code to interact with hardware using OS-specific APIs. Ensure consistency with development guidelines to support seamless integration.

Test and Debug the Driver

Use real and simulated tests to identify and fix issues early. Monitor performance and stability under different conditions.

Certify, Deploy, and Maintain

Meet certification requirements and prepare user-friendly installation packages. Plan for updates to maintain compatibility with future system changes.

Testimonials

Inomed- Jörg Wipfler (Head of R&D)
“Usually, if a problem occurs during the development process, you don’t know whether it’s in the firmware – or even in the hardware – or in the software on the PC, WinDriver helped enormously to avoid such problems.”
GE Healthcare - Yann Casteignau (Principal Engineer Digital Hardware Design)
“We were looking for a driver to allow access to the board’s resources for a Windows 2000-based software. Having no intention to develop the driver in-house, we then searched the web and found Jungo’s solution.”
Brookhaven National Laboratory - John Haggerty (Data Acquisition Coordinator)
“I have been impressed with the relative ease with which one can develop a high performance driver for a PCI card without much detailed knowledge of the computer’s hardware or even the system software."
BittWare - Dave Hedstrom (Senior Software Engineer)
“When we tried Jungo’s WinDriver, we were immediately pleased with what they had to offer, using only the evaluation version, we found that none of the limitations of the competing tool that we were faced with, applied to Jungo’s WinDriver. After only three days of development, we had a working driver and a kernel plug in for interrupts”
